Apartment hunting is a bitch. Also, the VMAs.

Between looking for an apartment and following the election coverage, I have been neglecting my very serious and important television watching duties. I never got a chance to write anything substantive about "The Hills" or "Gossip Girl" last week, and then "The Hills" totally blindsided me with a random bonus episode before the VMAs yesterday. Oh, well.

And speaking of the VMAs, I feel like popular culture is collapsing in on itself and watching MTV last night was like staring into the vortex. Seriously, what the hell was that? Listen up, MTV. You need to pick a fucking side in the culture war. You can't have it both ways. There is no middle ground anymore. So figure your shit out and stop fracturing popular culture into incoherent, meaningless fragments as you attempt to play both sides.

Also, MTV, it's adorable how badly you want to see Britney Spears prove that she's okay. We all want to see that, partially because we are all, in a sense, responsible for her downfall. She is like the ultimate symbolic casualty of everything that is wrong and disgusting in popular culture, and if she can redeem herself, perhaps there will be hope for the rest of us. But it's going to take more than some unearned silver moon men and a skit.

The VMA's are a perfect example of what John Butler was saying during his set at the Slow Foods Festival a week ago. Music Television is no longer about music. Its about money. Bring back long blocks of music videos, don't displace them on a random cable channel that I don't get because its not in my cable package. Discuss music's impact on the upcoming election, sports, anything tangible to its own construction. Do reports on the major music festivals around the country and the world.

Rihanna cannot sing and it doesn't entertain me to put her in ridiculous boots she can't walk in and have her sample a great song from the 80's or 90's. I can only hope the Police received some sort of license for S.O.S. but I seriously doubt it.
